When dividing decimals, make sure the divisor (the number on the OUTSIDE of the division sign) is a whole number.
In the division problem 0.4131÷0.17, for example, 0.17 is the divisor; it is the number of pieces we're cutting 0.4131into. 0.4131 is called the dividend.
To divide the decimals, 0.4131÷0.17 needs to be written like this:
0.17)0.4131
We start by making 0.17 a whole number. To do this, multiply 0.17 by 100 or move the decimal place two places to the right. 0.17 becomes 17!
Now, we need to change the dividend too. We DO NOT have to make the dividend a whole number, but we DO have to multiply the dividend by 100 too (remember, this is the same thing as moving the decimal place two places), like we did for the divisor. 0.4131 becomes 41.31.
Now, your division problem looks like this:
17)41.31
